Warrant Phone Scam Alert
We have shared several posts regarding phone scams, but this is one that has resurfaced locally.
Here’s how it works: a police imposter will call an intended victim and inform them there is a warrant for out for their arrest and that they will be arrested unless they pay money. Often, the caller claims that the arrest warrant is due to not paying a debt, missing jury duty, or committing some other minor infraction.
Some scammers have sophisticated technology and are able to manipulate caller ID data to show that the call is coming from the Sonora Police Department or another law enforcement agency.
Because police officers are a symbol of authority, scammers use both our sense of trust and fear to pull a fast one over our heads!
Know that the Police Department will NEVER ask for credit/debit card/gift card numbers, wire transfers, or bank routing numbers to clear up a legal matter over the phone.
The Police Department will NEVER contact individuals directly for payment of a possible crime.
If you encounter one of these types of calls:
Hang up and call the number of the Police Department by looking up the number listed in the phone book or our website (209-532-8143).
Never give out your personal information.
Remember to share these precautions with older generations who are regularly targeted for these types of scams.
