Re: Police Motorcycle
RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Public Safety Committee unanimously recommends the use of a police motorcycle for traffic enforcement in the City of Sonora.
BACKGROUND:
On August 5, 2005 the Public Safety Committee unanimously voted to approve the use of a police motorcycle for traffic enforcement in the City of Sonora. Detective Hal Prock and family have generously donated a 1994 Kawasaki Police Motorcycle to the Sonora Police Department. In addition, the City of Sonora has some history with Police Motors as one of the past Chief of Police rode a police motor while working.
DISCUSSION:
Police motorcycles are used for traffic enforcement around the world. The narrow congested streets of Sonora are ideal for the operation of Police motors. As you know the City of Sonora has a high accident rate. The use of the police motor would be used to address this high accident rate.
A policy outlining the use of the police motors has been developed and included in our police policy manual. Each officer who rides the motor would be required to attend a POST certified police motor school.
While the motorcycle has
been donated at no cost to the City of Sonora the ongoing maintenance of the motorcycle
will be paid from the Police Department buget.
