Subject: Office of Traffic Safety Grant Application

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Council approve the Office Of Traffic Safety Grant Application in the amount of approximately $145,000.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Sonora has long had the distinction of having one of the highest accidents rates for a city of its size. As we all know this is due to the large traffic volumes during business hours. Not only are many people injured and high amounts of property damaged as a result of these traffic collisions but many hours are spent investigating this accidents.

DISCUSSION:

Lt Mark Stinson has worked with the Office of Traffic Safety and put together the attached grant application. This grant would provide funding for personnel overtime, education materials, training and equipment. Some of the equipment that would be purchased include: DUI trailer, radar units and Preliminary Alcohol Screening Devices.
Officers would focus primarily on DUI drivers, drivers exceeding the speed limit and drivers failing to stop for red lights.
