Re: Legal Representation for Reserve Police Officers
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Council approve the payment of $372 to Police Officer Research Association of California (PORAC) for legal representation for Reserve Police Officers.
BACKGOUND:
Currently the City of Sonora Police Department utilizes three Level 1 Reserve Police Officers. These Level 1 Reserve Police Officers have all the powers and duties of a full time sworn Police Officer. Many times our Reserve Officers are call in to work shifts and special events. They handle all calls for service that a full time sworn officer would handle. However, these Reserve Officers are unpaid except for a small stipend. Also, currently these Reserve Officers have no legal representation if accused of wrong doing. In today's Law Enforcement world some type of representation is needed.
DISCUSSION:
This item appeared before the Public Safety
Committee on January 25, 2006 and was unanimously recommended for consideration
by the Sonora City Council. The annual payment per officer is $124. As we currently
have three Reserve Officers the annual payment would be $372.
