Re: Creation of Third Sergeants Position
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That the Sonora City Council authorize the personnel allocation of Police Sergeants positions be increased from two (2) to three (3) positions.
2. That the Sonora City Council authorize the personnel allocation of Police Officer positions be decreased from thirteen (13) to twelve (12) positions.
3. That the Sonora City Council authorize the salary adjustment in the amount of $7,285.17 for the fiscal year 05/06. This would be from Measure I funds.
BACKGROUND:
The passage of Measure I allows for the creation of a third Police Sergeants position within the Sonora Police Department. This item was brought before the Public Safety Committee which unanimously recommended it for Council consideration.
DISCUSSION:
The current operation of the Police Department provides patrol supervision Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm by the Police Lieutenant. We also have supervision from 5 pm to 3 am each night by the current Police Sergeants.
However, we have no supervision from 3 am to 8 am Monday through Friday and 3 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. From a Police Administrators point of view this lack of supervision creates a huge liability and accountability issue. Staff would recommend the immediate creation of a third Sergeants position.
This proposal does not create an additional
position within the Police Department. The proposal would upgrade a current officer
position to that of Police Sergeant. The additional cost would be approximately
$7,285.17 for the remainder of the 05/06 fiscal year. These funds would come from
the Measure I Police Budget.
